Charity

Since 1997, the Maine Marathon, Half Marathon and Marathon Relay and its participants have raised more than $3,500,000 for charity.

Every year, event organizers designate a local charity as the main beneficiary of race proceeds, and entrants are invited to make additional donations to that charity. The main beneficiary for 2016 is the Dream Factory of Maine, which grants dreams to critically and chronically ill children from ages 3-18.

The 2015 beneficiary, the Robbie Foundation (which bridges the gap for children with developmental disabilities by funding adaptive equipment, assistive technology and therapy treatment not covered by insurances), received $50,000 from race proceeds and $7,125 from runner donations.

In addition, the following groups received donations totaling more than $30,000: the Cromwell Center, STRIVE, Camp to Belong Maine, Portland Bayside Little League, the Falmouth, Cumberland and Yarmouth police departments for youth and/or fuel assistance programs, various high school and college sports programs, World Vision, the RRCA Kids’ Run the Nation program, and the Maine Army National Guard.

Meanwhile, a group of 76 runners raised more than $140,000 on behalf of the Josephine and John Marr Alzheimer’s Research Fund at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and another group raised $34,000 for the Maine Children’s Cancer Program.
