2025 Recap

Event records fell in both the men’s and women’s half marathon at the 33rd edition of the Maine Marathon, Half Marathon and Relay.

Just one year after Ryan Eiler set a new record in the men’s half marathon, Portland’s Colin Cernik, the 2024 runner-up, shaved another three seconds off the record with his time of 1 hour, 4 minute and 39 seconds. Two other Portland residents, Will Geoghegan (1:06:00) and Aaron Willingham (1:07:40), placed second and third.

Not far behind, Windham’s Cliodhna O’Malley was on her way to smashing the women’s half marathon record. A former UMaine star from Ireland, O’Malley finished on 1:05:06, 26 seconds faster than the record set by Hirut Guangul in 2019. Falmouth’s Veronica Graziano (1:17:30) was the runner-up for the second straight year after her victory in 2023, and Heather Gallant (1:17:50) of Wayne finished third while winning the masters division.

Chris Dunn of Eliot was the first non-binary runner, with a time of 1:21:19.

In the marathon, Emma Howe of Cambridge, Mass., ruled the women’s division for the second time in three years and Sammy Mills of Portland was the overall winner. Mills, with a time of 2:25:53, finished nearly six minutes ahead of Sanjay Raman (2:31:41) of Cambridge, Mass. Harrison Osborne (2:32:08) of Scarborough placed third.

Howe was equally dominant among the women. Her time of 2:45:25 gave her more than a 10-minute margin over Aisling Cuffe (2:26:05) of South Portland, who was followed by Emma Robidoux (2:57:26) of Portland.

Carey Patrick Wertz of Waterville won the non-binary division in 3:23:23.
